Ralph Fogelberg Barth

Obituary Date: Wednesday, October 26, 2016

Ralph Fogelberg Barth, 88 of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday October 26, 2016 at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville.

Ralph was born on November 28, 1927 in Rutherford, New Jersey to Charles Philip and Hilda Marie Fogelberg Barth. 

Ralph graduated from Rutherford High School in 1945 and from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York in 1949.  He received a commission in the Navy as a lieutenant.  His assignment included the reconstruction of post-World War II Europe.  While continuing with the Navy stateside, he attended New York University’s Graduate School of Business.

Mr. Barth was employed by Esso-Standard Oil (now ExxonMobil) in domestic marketing and the second half of his career worked in Exxon International.

Throughout his life, he was passionate about his faith and music.  Ralph was an underwriting founding member of the Orchard Park, NY Symphony Orchestra, and a founding elder of a small Presbyterian Church in Chappaqua, NY. 

While returning to New Jersey in 1982 he continued his love for church and music by serving on the music and worship committees of the Morristown Presbyterian Church; he served as Chairman of The Inter-Faith Council as well as Community Commissioner to the Mendham, NJ Department of Social Services.

Ralph continued his retirement in South Carolina where he joined Seneca Presbyterian Church serving on the Worship Committee; volunteered in elementary school mentoring; active in the Golden Corner Prostate Cancer Group.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Lynne Dee O’Neal Barth; his son, Craig Theodore Barth (Elizabeth); grandsons, Jordan W. Barth and Tyler M. Barth of Randolph, New Jersey; Step-Children, Mary Louise Herring, Christopher N. Sullivan, Stephen K. Sullivan, Andrew T. Sullivan, and Matthew M. Sullivan; Step Grandchildren, Marian Grace Herring, Kate A. Sullivan, and Bridget E. Sullivan.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Barth was preceded in death by his brother, Charlton T. Barth and his wife Marian Ketchum Barth.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 20, 2016 at Seneca Presbyterian Church, 115 W South 1st St, Seneca, SC 29678. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seneca Presbyterian Church, Seneca, South Carolina or the charity of one’s choice.
