Jerry A. Hughes

Obituary Date: Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Jerry A. Hughes left this world on November 9, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. He had fought a long hard battle with cancer for 3 years. He never gave up that he would beat this horrible disease until his last week when we had to tell him it had moved to his brain.

He was born in the  Silver City Community at the home of his Mama Walls. He was preceded in death by his parents, Avon and Pauline Hughes; his father-in-law, Fred H. Williams; and several special aunts and uncles.

Jerry married the love of his life, Janice Williams Hughes on September 30, 1967 and they were together 49 years and 2 months. They were blessed with 2 wonderful children a wonderful daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Their son Jeffrey Hughes and daughter-in-law, Robin Cranford Hughes; their daughter Jennifer Hughes Hester and son-in-law, Harold Hester; his grandchildren, Tray Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Ethan Hester and his little girl Jenna-Ruth Hester; a special person Ginger Russell Wagoner who when her father passed away, Jerry loved her like his own.

He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Virginia R. Williams; his sisters, Regina Bennett and Art Hasselman, Nancy and Jim Sitton; brothers, Dennis and Janice Hughes, Steven and Kathy Hughes.

Jerry, a native of Forsyth County, graduated from Forsyth County High School then went to work at Wilson's which is now Tyson Foods. He was drafted in the United States Army which he proudly served in South Korea after the conflict. When he returned from service his main goal was to go to Daytona for the February race and then he began his career at General Motors Parts Division. He remained there for 32 1/2 years. Jerry was a hard worker and he never saw the point of missing a day of work. After his retirement he thought it was time to take care of his mother and mother-in-laws yard work but that soon became not enough so he went to Midway Building Supply to work. After about 5 years he decided to come home and babysit his 6 week old grandson, Ethan. He did an excellent job and spoiled him rotten then he kept his granddaughter, Jenna-Ruth.

Jerry was loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A special thank you to Janet Fields and Halcyon Hospice.
