John F. Csomor

Obituary Date: Monday, January 2, 2017

We regretfully announce that Mr. John F. Csomor passed away in Dahlonega, Georgia, on Monday, January 2, 2017. Mr. Csomor was a beloved professor at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia, between 1967 and 1996.

He made Dahlonega his home for fifty years. Born John Franklin Csomor December 11, 1933, in East Chicago, Indiana, to Hungarian immigrants Csomor Janos (John), Szocs Zsuzsanna (Susan), and big brother Ferenc/Frank.  After finishing high school in 1952, Mr. Csomor enlisted in the Air Force and spent 1952-1956 in between North Africa and Germany. After completing his service, he attended and graduated with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Indiana University after working intermittently in the open hearths of the Inland Steel Company. Coming to North Georgia College (UNG) in Dahlonega in 1967, Mr. Csomor helped build the political science department’s focus on Eastern European and Russian studies. Mr. Csomor held various positions of leadership and advisement during his time at North Georgia. He remained active in matters of local education after retiring in 1996, by working with the Lumpkin County Retired Teacher’s Association until his health prevented him from continuing. In honor of his father’s service in the Austro-Hungarian army during WWI, Mr. Csomor translated a first-hand account of a soldier’s experience in the same military unit. Published in 1991, In Death’s Fortress describes the sixth battle of the Isonzo River in northern Italy.

Preceding John in death are Csomor Janos of Agyagfalva, Harghita, Romania; Szocs Zsuzsanna of Bikafalva, Harghita, Romania; and Csomor Ferenc’ of Bikafalva, Harghita, Romania (Hammond, Indiana). He is survived by his daughter, Susan Csomor Blum and his grandson Ethan Scott Blum, as well as relatives in the Carpathians in Transylvania, Romania.

Mr. Csomor will be remembered for his sense of humor, for his dedication to education and his enchanting North Georgia College, his fierce love for his city Chicago and Indiana Harbor, for his family, and for anyone who needed to know that there was someone behind them who believed in their abilities as a student or a person in general to be great and reach for whatever they wanted to achieve….that person was him. Combined with his studies and because he was a natural observer of life and politics, Mr. Csomor’s global perspective was always unique and appreciated. He will be deeply missed and his absence felt by friends and family.
