Gail Grier Lewis

Obituary Date: Sunday, March 19, 2017
Gail Grier Lewis went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2017.  Gail was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 4, 1932 to Paul and Helen Grier. She spent a brief part of her youth in Atlanta, Georgia and Melbourne, Florida before her family moved to Cocoa, Florida.  From 8th through 12th grade, she attended the Montverde School in Montverde, Florida. She was a member of Montverde’s class of 1950. She then joined her family in Chevy Chase, Maryland where she met her loving husband, William D. Lewis.  She worked for the Army Map service before her husband’s job took her back to her birthplace of Atlanta, GA.  Upon her husband’s passing in 1969, Gail moved to Gainesville, GA to be closer to family. It was here she discovered her love of travel after she took a job with - and later became part owner of - WorldWide Travel.  She travelled the world many times over with tour groups and private tours. She loved meeting new people and introducing them to the treasures that our world has to offer.  Gail was especially proud of her north Georgia heritage, and took great pride in shepherding visitors all around the Gainesville area, revealing hidden gems amid the many small townships and municipalities.  She retired from the travel business in 2004.  Outside of travel, she loved gardening, as well as raising and tending to her dogs.  She had a special fondness for dachshunds.  She was an active member of the South Bend United Methodist Church, Pilot Club, and an Investment Club until she became ill in 2009.

Gail is preceded in death by her parents, Paul Edwin Grier and Helen Frances Rothfus Grier, and her beloved husband, William D. Lewis.  Gail is survived by her brother, Charles Grier, and his wife, Helen Grier, her nephew, John Grier, and his wife, Ellen Grier, her nieces, Susan Gillette and Robin Vettoretti, and their husbands, Kevin Gillette and Paul Vettoretti, and many more friends and relatives.

Services for Gail will be held April 1, 2017, at 11am, at the South Bend United Methodist Church, 3512 Clarks Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30506. Rev. Richard Long will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11 am at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Salvation Army in memory of Gail Lewis.
