Josefa Pla

Josefa Pla, affectionately known as TaTa, when she was a young child a Catholic school nun changed her name to Josephine.

She was born on July 20, 1918 in Key West, Florida to the parents of Juan and Maria Regla of Havana, Cuba. She was the younger girl of nine children. TaTa lived in Key West until 1941, and then relocated to Miami Beach, FL where she worked for Machado, the former President of Cuba. She only had a 5th grade education, but she taught herself to read and write after she left school. 

Josephine was very close to her brothers and sisters, Juanita, Manolo, Graciela, Maria Luisa, Armando, Carlos, Ernesto, and Eusebio. As she grew older, TaTa would help her grandfather, Jose Pla’s restaurant serving people and cleaning up. In 1954, she moved to Philadelphia, PA and lived there until 2010 and relocated to Gainesville, GA with her son and daughter-in-law Gussie. She was committed to helping family and friends. She provided encouragement and support with her generous spirit and loving heart.

Josephine is survived by her son Alfonso and his wife Gussie of Gainesville, GA, two brothers Carlos Pla and Estebau Pla of Miami, FL, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends all over the United States. TaTa will be missed dearly and will always be in the hearts of her family.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 11,2017 at Wimberly & Jackson Funeral Home at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Professional Services Entrusted to Wimberly& Jackson Funeral Home
