William C. Garner

Obituary Date: Monday, May 15, 2017

William C. Garner, 96, passed away in Cumming, Georgia, on May 12, 2017.  Bill was born June 16, 1920, in Polk County, Georgia.

Bill was preceded in death by his infant daughter Laura Kay, his wife Dottie in 2005, and his wife Donna in 2014.  He was also preceded in death by seven siblings.  He is survived by his sister, Helen Swindle, of Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephew

Spending most of his life in the military, Bill enlisted in the United States Army on June 4, 1940, and served until August 10, 1945, in the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion.  He fought from Normandy, through Bastogne, the Bulge and the Ardennes.  After World War II, Bill left the service of his country for a period to work in private industry.  He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving both in the U.S. and South America and taking part in Operation Ivy, the detonation of the first hydrogen bomb exploded by the U.S. in 1952 on Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific.  After retiring from the USAF, Bill joined the Georgia Air National Guard, serving with them at Dobbins Air Force Base until July of 1976.

Visitation will be held at Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming on Monday, May 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m., with services to be held there on May 16 at 11 a.m.
