George Walton Moore III

Obituary Date: Sunday, May 14, 2017

George Walton Moore III (Walton), age 76, died on May 14, 2017 at Lanier Village Estates following an extended illness.

Walton was born in Gainesville, GA on July 13, 1940.  His parents were the late George Walton Moore, Jr.  and the late Grace Hooten Moore.  After graduating from Gainesville High School he attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.  He received his college degree from the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega.

For a number of years after college, Walton was employed by Eaton Pharmaceuticals in the Washington, D.C. area.  It was there he met his wife, Nancy, and where his children were born.  Strong ties brought him and his family back to his hometown of Gainesville.

For over thirty years, Walton was employed by Regions Bank (formerly First National Bank) serving as a trust officer and later as first vice president in Corporate Loans.  Joyce Stephens, a colleague of Walton’s describes Walton as having “a dedicated passion for his work.  If you were his client, he made sure that your needs were met.  Walton was sincere, genuine, and you knew he would do anything he could for you. “

Not only did Walton enjoy his work, he enjoyed life in general.  Time spent with family and friends were the highlights.  You could find him on the golf course on most Saturdays; enjoying the comradery even more than the game.  He was a Georgia Bulldog fan and missed few home games.

Being involved in his community was very important to him.  During the 1980’s, Walton served as a member of the Gainesville City School Board and as chairman for two years.  He was a long time member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as president, as well as lieutenant governor.  As a member of Gainesville United Methodist Church, he was chairman of the church council and was also on the administration board.  Other community involvements included United Way, Gateway, and the Arts Council.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Nancy Arthur Moore, and their children Margie and Sam Couvillon of Gainesville; Ashley and Jerry Galya of Buford.  His four grandchildren are Sarah Grace Couvillon, Molly Couvillon, Mimi Linville and Ben Linville.  He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Evanda Moore, Gainesville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dixie and Dick Harris, Raleigh, NC, Jean and Mark Young, Atlanta, and June and Bruce Boggs, Charleston, SC.

Walton brought a smile to many, love and laughter to more, and perhaps his greatest legacy is his good example of a life well lived.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Lanier Village Estates for their love, support, and dedication over the past years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gainesville First United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association, 4100 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA  30346.

A celebration of life service will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church on Monday, May 22, 2017 at 3:00 p.m.  The family will receive friends in the gathering room at the church following the service.
