Edwin Adams Jr., age 89, died on Friday July 14, 2017 at the Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care facility in Cumming, Georgia.

He was born on June 5, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edwin and Eleanor (Rahn) Adams. Edwin was the second of seven children, Betty(deceased), Nora, Dick(deceased), Leroy, Alberta (deceased)and Floyd.

His children are Steve (Elka), David (Laura), Leslie Kennedy (Larry), Guy (deceased) (Kim), Mike Horton (Patti), and Sherry Horton De Hart. His many grandchildren include Malinda Bailey, Tony and Danielle Horton, Kimberly Schmidt-Wagner (Brad Wagner), Jennifer McGillis, Angelique Yemma (Jesse), Carl, Kathy and Billy Leach, Kyle Richardson, and Nathan and Ashley Adams. Great grandchildren include Austin Edwin Adams, Nathan Bailey, Alston Leach, Owen, Nolan and Elise Wagner, John Wayne and Grace McGillis, and Zayden Adams.

After graduating from Central Vocational High School, Edwin joined the U.S. Marines in February 1946, serving almost two years mostly overseas in China. He was proud to be a “China Marine” and received the China Service Medal.

In September 1952, he joined the Cincinnati Police force and served for 15 years until December 1967. In 1960, his captain wrote of him, “Does an excellent job in the criminal field and is dependable.” In 1962, his District 3 captain wrote that he was “outstanding” in the criminal field.

In 1994 after the death of his second wife, Doris Horton Adams, Edwin moved to Buford, Georgia to be closer to his son, Steve Adams, Commander of American Legion Post 127 in Buford, Georgia. Edwin was also in the American Legion and held the following roles:

  • Post 127 Senior Vice Commander for 5 years

  • Post 127 Junior Vice Commanderfor 15 years

  • Post 127 Chaplin

  • Post 127 Board Member

  • Post 127 Adjutant for 19 years

A Memorial service is planned later at American Legion Post 127 2640 Sawnee Ave, Buford, Georgia with a private interment at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
