Dr. Roy James Powell, age 83, of Gainesville passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at his residence, surrounded by family.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 2, 2017 in the Chapel of Rocko Funeral Home in Montevallo, Alabama, with interment following at Harless Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Rocko Funeral Home, 3715 AL-25, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.
Mr. Powell was born February 18, 1934 to the late Ernest & Edna Powell in Miami, Florida. He served in the United States Air Force, during the Korean War, from 1952 – 1956. Dr. Powell taught anything to do with Engineering Technology and Robotics for over 30 years, beginning at Miami-Dade Community College, Western Carolina University, Cleveland Community College and Chattanooga State Community College, where he retired.
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Joyce Powell of Gainesville; sons & daughters-in-law, Jon & Dawn Powell in Knoxville, Tennessee and Mark & Cherry Starkweather of Franklin, North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; niece, Suzie South; and grand-nephew, Chris Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Everett Powell and Bill Powell.
