Billy Joe Thompson, Sr.

Billy Joe Thompson, Sr., age 75 of Cornelia, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, September 06, 2017 at his residence following an extended illness.

 A life-long native of Habersham County, Billy was born on February 27, 1942 a son of the late Henry Thompson & Stella Stephens Thompson. He enjoyed buying and selling cars, spending precious time with his family, vacations to Myrtle Beach, and camping.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Virginia Lee Tench Thompson of Cornelia, GA; son, Billy Joe “Joey” Thompson, Jr., of Cornelia, GA; daughter & son-in-law, Lisa Thompson Free & Michael Free of Alto, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy & Janie Thompson of Cornelia, GA; sisters and brother-in-law, Judy & Jack Broome of Mt. Airy, GA; Brenda Adams of Cornelia, GA; grandchildren, Amber & Trey Gibby of Cornelia, GA; Joshua Free of Commerce, GA; Kindal & Josie Thompson, both of Cornelia, GA; great-grandchildren, Hayden & Saylor Gibby, both of Cornelia, GA; Conner Free of Commerce, GA: special caregiver & friend, Lisa Hooper of Demorest, GA; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, & friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 08, 2017 from the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Lee Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Peter Gomez officiating at the graveside.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 4 p.m. & 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday.
