Thomas Henry Black Jr

Obituary Date: Friday, October 20, 2017

Thomas Henry Black Jr., age 90, of Dahlonega passed away at his home on October 20, 2017.  Tom was a member of Dahlonega United Methodist Church. Throughout his life Tom enjoyed sailing, card playing, reading, crossword puzzles, and telling jokes.  He started playing first tennis and then golf in his early 50’s and he excelled at both as his friends will attest. Tom received, and the family is grateful for, the love and support from the Achasta community.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Henry Black Sr. and Helen Callahan Black, his 3 sisters Eileen, Marjorie, and Helen, and in 2000 his wife of 52 years, Joan Therese (Terry) Black.

Tom is survived by his wife of 15 years, Sally McAlister Black, his 5 children Judi, Steve (Cindy), Tom III (Noi), Peter (Chris), and Lori (Jim), Sally’s 2 children Madeline (Mike) and Cynthia (Bill), 17 Grandchildren, and 5 Great Grandchildren.

Tom was born in Newton, Massachusetts February 13, 1927. Tom joined the U S Coast Guard in 1944 at age 17 and served time in the Asia Pacific theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Seaman First Class. Tom and Terry moved to San Francisco and had their first two children. They returned to Boston and Tom graduated in 1954 with a BS from Suffolk University in Boston.  He was employed as a Sales Engineer by Barry Wright Corporation in Watertown MA until 1965 when he relocated his family of 7 to Sandy Springs, Georgia. At that time he started Black Engineering Sales Company, an independent manufacturer’s sales agency working with Terry until he retired in 1990.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11 am at Dahlonega United Methodist Church in Dahlonega. Family will receive friends on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 5pm until 7pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home.
