Oscar Newton Davis

Obituary Date: Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Mr. Oscar Newton Davis, age 82, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

Oscar was born in Lumpkin County on May 17, 1935 to the late Austell Newton and Sydney Louise Roberts Davis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Donald Newton Davis, brother Daniel Jackson Davis, sisters Margaret Borst, Sara Jean Baker and Patsy Brooks. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.  After attending college Oscar went straight to work in Atlanta for the state as Data Center Manager working with computers...a job he continued for more than 30 years. He loved his work and never missed a day. However, once he set his mind on retirement, he began to count down the days.

Oscar met and married his lovely wife Barbara in September of 1957. She was just shy of 16 and he was 22. He was a proud and wonderful father. He coached his daughter’s softball team and even played softball himself.

He and Barbara moved from Atlanta to Dahlonega approximately 22 years ago. They were fortunate to find a lovely home right across the street from his father. Oscar and his brother have been known to spend weekends on their hunting land in Sparta, Georgia and he enjoyed time with his son as they hunted together. When Oscar wasn’t hunting and fishing, he was watching any type of sporting event possible.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Barbara Moore Davis, Dahlonega; daughters Cheryl Davis, Woodstock and Deborah Davis, Atlanta.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Friday, February 16, 2018 at the funeral home.
