George William McVay

Obituary Date: Saturday, February 17, 2018

George William McVay, 84, of Flowery Branch passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Reverend Clyde Self officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. and on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Born on December 25, 1933 in Florala AL, he was the son of the late Floyd Young McVay and Alice Wynona Barton McVay. He was a member of Mt. Salem Baptist Church.

Mr. McVay was retired from the United States Army. First Sergeant George W., McVay joined the military in 1953 as an Infantryman. He retired in 1976 after 23 years of service.  During this time, he served as an Airborne Ranger, a Ranger Instructor, a Master Parachutist, Jump Master and as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army. He saw service from the continental United States, Germany, the Republic of Vietnam and Korea. Medals he received: Bronze Star with 3 oak leaf clusters and a V device, Army commendation medal with V device, National defense service medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Army of occupation medal-Germany, Master parachutist badge, Ranger tab, Expert infantry badge, Combat infantry badge, Air Medal, Vietnam service medal with 1 silver star and 1 bronze star, Vietnam campaign medal with 60 device, Vietnam cross of gallantry with palm device, Republic of Vietnam ranger badge, and Good conduct medal 6th award.

Mr. McVay is preceded in death by his sister, Alice Anton and brother and sister in law, Wesley and Joe McVay and brother, Floyd McVay.

Mr. McVay is  survived by his wife, Betty Ann Loving McVay of Flowery Branch; son and daughter in law, Billy and Brenda Reynolds of Carnesville; son, Anthony Reynolds of Flowery Branch; son and daughter in law, Daniel and Wendy McVay of Braselton; daughter and son in law, Sheila and Joseph Martin of Hoschton; son and daughter in law, Antony and Sherri McVay of FL; sons, Chris McVay, Tracey McVay both of FL, Lawayne McVay of TN; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Georgette Brumfield, Charlotte Boyer; sister in law, Carol McVay and a number of nieces and nephews.
