Joanne Frierson

Joanne Frierson, 87, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018.

As a native Gainesvillian, Joanne attended Candler Street School, Gainesville High School, and Brenau University. She belonged to Alpha Delta Pi. She married the love of her life, Charles Redwine Frierson, Jr. (Charlie) in 1950. The two of them made a beautiful life together for over 57 years.

Joanne was very active in Gainesville First Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. She held several offices with the Women of the Church. In 1992 she was named Rotary Club Woman of the Year.

She was a charter member of the Gainesville Junior Service League and held several offices including President. As an active member of the Gainesville community, she served as a loyal volunteer at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center for over 50 years, serving as President of the Medical Center Auxiliary from 1989-1990. She and Charlie served as the Love Light co-chairs in 1994. She most enjoyed her time working in the emergency room, as it provided her an opportunity to comfort those in need, and was honored to receive the first “Nell Wiegand Patient Friend Award” in 2003.

Joanne was an avid gardener and photographer. She loved her family and nothing pleased her more than spending time with them.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Bruce McAllister of Winter Park, Florida and Carol and John Thurman of Atlanta, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, Chip and Leslie Frierson of Gainesville, Georgia; grandchildren, Brian and Elizabeth McAllister Coates, Meg McAllister, and Charlie and Kelly McAllister; great-grandchildren, JB and Crosby Coates, Madison and Mackie McAllister all of Winter Park, Florida; and her sister-in-law, Martha Frierson Walker of Cumming, Georgia.

A memorial service will be held in her honor on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 10:00am at Gainesville First Presbyterian Church. Family will visit with friends following the service in the Swetenburg Hall.
