Elmer Cecil Banks

Obituary Date: Tuesday, May 1, 2018

Elmer Cecil Banks, 90, of Cleveland Georgia, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2018 after a short illness.

The family will receive visitors from 12 – 2 pm on Saturday, May 5th at Barrett Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held graveside at Yonah View Cemetery in Cleveland, with burial following.

Elmer was a proud American patriot and US Army veteran.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Doris Banks, daughter Beverly Taylor, son-in-law Leonard Taylor, grandsons Christopher and Daniel Taylor, and great grandchildren Owen, Parker, and Cora Grace Taylor. He is also survived by his brothers Tilford Banks of Demorest, Carven Banks of Demorest, Otis Banks of Ohio, Vermon Banks of Demorest, and his Sister Colene Hudson of Covington.

Elmer was a self-employed tool and die maker for more than 60 years. During this time he designed and built production dies for many of the largest manufacturing companies in Atlanta. He took great pride in being able to take a rough schematic, and create precision dies to exacting tolerances.

Elmer was also an avid gardener. He enjoyed the process of tilling, planting, and tending his “crops”. His garden was always bountiful, and he kept many family members stocked with vegetables - especially tomatoes - all summer. He was always happy when his great grandson Owen was able to help him.

He loved spending time with his grandsons as they were growing up, and they dearly loved spending time with their Pop. He taught them how to fish, how to use tools to build small structures, and how to repair things around the house. They spent many happy days working on projects together, and many great afternoons fishing on the ‘Hooch.

A very important day in Elmer’s life occurred when he became a great grandfather. He delighted in watching Owen, Parker, and Cora as they grew and changed and experienced all that life had to offer. He especially enjoyed being with them at Christmas.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at P.O. Box 4527 New York, NY 10163.
