Mrs. Joyce Redwine Hayes, 80, of Gainesville passed away peacefully August 24, 2018, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Hayes was born on October 13, 1937, in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Reuben and Mary Redwine. She grew in Spartanburg, SC., until she went to Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky and graduated in 1960. She moved to Atlanta and received her Master’s in Religious Education from Emory University in 1962, and in 1981 she received her Masters of Social Work from the University of Georgia.
Joyce began her professional career in 1960 with the Salvation Army as both caseworker and Program Director for the youth camp and then was the Director of Christian Education at Gainesville First United Church. In September of 1979, Joyce was a teacher and counselor at the Christian Education Center, now known as CenterPoint. After receiving her MSW, she worked in the field of international adoption for over 30 years, creating thousands of families working with Lutheran Ministries of Georgia, Bethany Christian Services and Families First in Atlanta. She finally had her deserved retirement in 2013.
Joyce met her late husband, Nath Hayes, in 1961 as she was working at the church. They were married on September 7, 1963. Their life together revolved around raising six children, going to the beach as a family, spending time at the family cabin in Lake Winfield Scott, loving their friends at Indian Springs Holiness Camp Meeting, camping trips to Holly Cove, white water rafting down the Nantahala River, and traveling to the United States Virgin Islands. One special trip Joyce and Nath loved was white water rafting down the Middle Fork of the Snake River in Idaho with her sister Jean and two of their nephews.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Gerry Vertulfo of Eugene, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law Natalie and Scott Ward of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; son Tom Hayes of Atlanta; daughter and son-in-law Heather and Jeff Chandler of Gainesville, daughter Kimberly Hayes of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law Tim and Jean Hayes of San Francisco, California. Joyce adored her grandchildren Hayes and Mary Ferris Vertulfo, Megan Hayes, Nath and Louisa (Loulou) Hayes, Bella Grace Ward and Jae Hayes. Joyce had a very special relationship with her sister Jean Allen of Fayetteville, and loved her sisters-in-law. Other survivors are nieces, nephews all of whom Joyce loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Gainesville First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to Path Project (www.programpath.org) for Baker-Glover or mailed to Path Project, PO Box 1659, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 ear marked Baker-Glover- Joyce Hayes Memorial, or to Family Promise of Hall County.
