Doreatha Gwendolyn (Davis) Chapman

Obituary Date: Friday, September 6, 2019

Mrs. Doreatha Gwendolyn (Davis) Chapman, age 80 of Gainesville, Georgia, formerly of New York City, passed away Friday, September 6, 2019 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Chapman was born June 21, 1939 at the Gallinger Hospital in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Robert Davis and Orrie (Brown) Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Chapman, Sr.; sister, Peggy of California and stepdad, George Hamilton.

That would explain why Doreatha was a natural born leader after Robert passed, Orrie, Doreatha’s Mother moved to NYC with her new husband, George Hamilton. Where Doreatha’s life began to take shape. She married Donald Robert Chapman Sr. in June of 1960. She later borne him two children, Donald Jr. and Monya’. Doreatha loved her children and did all she could to see that they grow up in a loving home. Although Doreatha and Donald Sr. divorced. They still maintained a good relationship. Doreatha was employed for over 35 years with the City’s Health and Hospital Corp., where although she was a clerk, wore many different hats, working in the Emergency Room at Sydenham Hospital, which later closed down and Doreatha was transferred to the new modernized clinic on the famous 125th Street Strip. Because of her vibrant spirit and tenacity, she was loved by many, especially at the clinic. On any given day you would see her running or walking quickly through the clinic helping patients whatever language they spoke she always made a way to communicate with them, so they could get the help they needed. She was a force to be reckoned with. It pleased her to help people and get things done.

In the 90’s she became President of the Tenants Association of NYCHA, where she served the people and fought for the rights of the people she served. She attended classes for Police Academy liaison for NYCHA and community affairs.

Mrs. Chapman was devoted to a cause, whether it was hers, yours or ours. She always attacked the powers to be with a forceful agenda, taking care of the people. She loved gardening. She incorporated very young children in agriculture and nature at Annunciation Catholic School in Manhattan, she taught gardening and the children/fathers/parents and teachers loved her. Another of her proudest moments.

Although she has left us physically her legacy will live on in her family. Mrs. Doreatha Gwendolyn Chapmen leaves to mourn her eldest son, Donald Jr. and daughter-in-law, Sharon and his children, Ashley, Marshall, Donald III, Marcus, Brittny, and Sharone; daughter, Monya’ and her daughter, Erica, granddaughter, (Ma) Tyane Treadwell and her family Savon, Danika and Deana. Her only living cousin, Cotel Brown. Her youngest son, Akim (Aaron) and his family, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and Sharlene Adams.

Doreatha had a good life and endured much scrutiny, but rose above it all and stood strong in what she believed regardless of how anyone felt. She was opinionated, loving, nurturing, feisty and just simply fearless. When people ask about her passing. I simply say, someone in the Garden of Eden was not weeding properly so God needed her our beloved Doreatha to help.

Our family wishes to express our sincere thanks for your love and support during our time of bereavement. “DD”, “GG”, or Granny is gone but not forgotten. We love you, a special love goes out to her nephew, Erik, who she adored and started college this year, know that Aunt D will be watching over you this season.
