Mildred Dorothy Cantrell

Mildred Dorothy Cantrell, of Sautee, Ga passed away December 1st, 2019 in Demorest, Georgia at the age of 94.

She was born April 1st, 1925 and grew up in Dukes Creek area of White County. She was the daughter of late Reverend Henry and Bertha Howard. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Cantrell; brother, Bobby Howard; sisters, Ruby Hicks and Francis Davidson; son, Richard Cantrell; daughters, Wanda Sutton and Reta Buie; and grandchildren, Kasi Glover and Michael Sosebee.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Cunningham; children, Jerry Cantrell, Wayne Cantrell (Roberta), Donna Sosebee (Hoyt); grandchildren, Angele Cantrell (Mike), Scott Cantrell (Karen), Andy Cantrell, Curee Chance (Adam), Travis Cantrell, Kim Glover Robinson (Michael), Eric Sosebee (Lynn), Jill Barrett (Grady), Leslie Myers, Mandi Hutchinson (William), and Kayla Cantrell; great-grandchildren, Patsy Folds, Scarlett Chance, Aria Chance, Karter Hess (Chris), Kendall Elrod (Drew), Addie Lankford, Jake Lankford, Destiny Sosebee, Michael Sosebee, Jr., Mason Sosebee, Mathew Sosebee, Blake Cheek, Colton Sosebee, Oliver Myers, and Henry Myers; and one great-great granddaughter, Bellamy Elrod.

Mildred spent her entire life in White County except for a couple of years in Marietta, while working as a Rosie Riveter in the Bell Bomber plant to help the war effort.  She married and returned to Sautee to live the challenging and hard life of a farmer’s wife.  She had infinite energy and when her six children were old enough, she also took a full-time job at Helen’s Orbit Outlet making women’s apparel.   When Orbit shut down, she worked for several years at Unicoi in the kitchen as the head cook and then later at the Tanglewood Restaurant.  People came from all over north Georgia to indulge in her wonderful home cooking.

Having only attained a 10th grade education Mildred always wanted a high school diploma.  At the age of 70, she enrolled in the GED program and finished top of her class. Mildred was awarded the Georgia Eagle Award for top honors.

She was loved by all and was known as “Granny” by her children and grandchildren.   She would answer the call to help anyone in need and loved her family unconditionally.   Her compassion, generosity, grit, sense of humor and hearty chuckle will live on in our memories forever. She will be dearly missed.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
