Theresa Kannan Worrel

Obituary Date: Saturday, February 15, 2020

Theresa Kannan Worrel, of Gainesville, died on Saturday, February 15, 2020, surrounded by her family. She relished life for 92 years.

Theresa was born on August 18, 1927 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She attended Goldsboro High School, Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina, and started graduate studies in social work at Vanderbilt University. She initially worked in child welfare in Goldsboro and later, as director of social services at Fort Benning, Georgia where she met Carvill Worrell. They married on November 1, 1954 and were together for 63 years, until his death in 2017.

Theresa and Carty, as he was known, lived in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Georgia. They moved to Alpharetta, Georgia in 1971. In Georgia, Theresa worked for Travellers’ Aid and then for the American Red Cross, working in the disaster relief program and with military families. Her disaster relief work took her to communities throughout the US to provide assistance in the wake of floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. She retired from social work in 1988 and afterward, worked part-time doing food demonstrations in grocery stores. She and Carty moved to Lanier Village Estates in 2012.

Theresa loved to cook, to do water aerobics, to cheer for her Braves and especially at LVE, to play bingo. But her greatest joy throughout her life was her family - her siblings and their spouses, her nieces and nephews, her daughters and sons-in-law, her grandchildren, and most recently, her great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her daughters Linda Worrell (of New York, NY and Deal, UK), Tamara Stout (of Gainesville, GA) and Judy Grimes (of Ponte Vedra Beach, FLA), her sons-in-law Peter Wraight, Bruce Stout and Mike Grimes, her grandchildren, Clayton Stout and his wife Rachel (of Missoula, MT), Chris Stout, his wife Kelsey and their daughter and Theresa’s great-granddaughter and namesake, Ellery Theresa Stout (of Alexandria, VA) and Ryan, Ian and Kristan Grimes (of Jacksonville, FL).

We will celebrate Theresa’s life at a memorial service on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, Georgia.
