Vikings, Marchman get bittersweet win over Spartans

By By Jeff Hart
RABBITTOWN - An emotional week for East Hall coach Tim Marchman finally came to an end Friday night.

And it was a happy celebration as his new Vikings team beat his old West Hall team 27-20 in a big Region 7-AAA game.

"I love those all those kids over there and I'm a little sad for them. But I love these guys and how they work hard. And these kids are really coming along. This was a big win for us," Marchman said.

The Vikings (3-2, 3-2) blew open a close game in the third quarter on an 83-yard TD pass from lee Coleman to Todd Goss and then a Goss TD run to run out to a 25-7 lead.

But West Hall (3-3, 3-3) came storming back. Devin Snapp, held in check most of the game, broke loose for a 13-yard scoring run and then Mike Burgamy hit Steven Smigelski on a 67-yard TD pass to cut it 27-20.

The Spartans got the ball back with just over five minutes left but failed on a 4th-and-7 and then East Hall ran out the clock.

"I thought we made some big plays when we needed them and we held on at the end," Marchman said.

East Hall's Coleman, who finished with 2 TD passes, now has 8 on the season and has at least one in every game this season.

Mike Burgamy had another strong game for West Hall throwing for two TDs.

East Hall is now in the thick of the playoff race and has already faced both North Hall and Gainesville. The Vikings next travel to Pickens County to begin a four-game stretch against the second level teams in Region 7-AAA.

West Hall has a week off before traveling to Chestatee and still has unbeatens Gainesville and North Hall on the schedule.
