NE Ga. forest fires under control

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - Nearly 20 forest fires in northeast Georgia that scorched more than 80 acres the past two days are all under control.

Shawn Alexander of the Georgia Forestry Commission office in Gainesville said the largest of them burned 51 acres in Walton County.

Alexander said most of the fires occurred Sunday and were caused when strong winds toppled trees across power lines. Some, he said, were caused when controlled burns got out of control.

There were also fires in Oconee, Stephens, Banks, Barrow, Franklin, Hart, Lumpkin, Morgan and White counties.
