OAKWOOD – Oakwood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve a 4.0 millage rate, keeping holding the rate steady from last year.
“We wanted to keep the rate steady so that property owners who have not had their properties reassessed would see the same amount as they had last year,” said City Manager Stan Brown. “2014 was at 4 mills and 2015 will be the same.”
Last week, the city held a final public hearing to allow anyone from the community to voice his or her support or opposition to the millage rate proposal. No one came to speak for or against the proposed rate.
Under Georgia law, keeping the millage rate where it is represents a tax increase, even though it will not raise taxes across the board.
The planning commission had at one point proposed lowering the rate to 3.6 mills.
Brown said council members were concerned that if Oakwood did not keep the same rate, the city would lose much-needed operating funds.
