Man struck by car, killed on Athens Hwy. south of Gainesville

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE — Charges are pending in a weekend accident that killed a pedestrian on Athens Highway.

A spokesman for the Gainesville post of the Georgia State Patrol said Darrell Harris, 58, was walking southbound on the highway just south of Gaines Mill Road when he was struck by a southbound vehicle on Saturday night. He said Harris was in the right turn lane of the highway at the time he was hit. The incident report indicated that Harris often walked along that stretch of road.

The driver of the car initially left the scene, but returned a short time later with his wife, according to the trooper.

The GSP identified the driver as 37-year-old Jose Acosta. At this point, no charges have been filed against Acosta.

The death in Gainesville was one of 14 traffic deaths reported during the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period in Georgia.
