GAINESVILLE — Georgia Power Company this week presented C.W. Davis Middle School and Ethan Shirley with a $1,000 New Teacher Assistance grant. Shirley is one of 40 new public school teachers from across the state who will be presented a grant through the company.

Georgia Power Area Representative Darrell Snyder presented the grant to Shirley at the Hall County School Board meeting Monday night at school board headquarters. Shirley is a 7th grade special education math teacher at Davis.

Georgia Power awards the grants each year to provide the state's newest teachers with funds to purchase classroom supplies and equipment. Teacher nominations were submitted to Georgia Power by Georgia public colleges and universities that have schools of education. Candidates must be in the top 25% of their graduating class academically.

Since launching the program in 2004, nearly 400 new teachers in communities across the state have been awarded individual grants.
