2 Ga. prison guards step down amid inmate beating probe

By Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Two prison guards have resigned after a photo of a beaten inmate was distributed online from a facility that they were supposed to be supervising, Georgia Department of Corrections officials said Tuesday.

The guards, who stepped down, haven't been identified. The Department of Corrections is investigating, spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan said.

The photo shows Cortez Berry, 18, with a swollen eye, kneeling down in front of two other shirtless inmates who have fixed a makeshift leash around his neck at the Burruss Correctional Training Center in Forsyth.

The identities of the other inmates in the photo haven't been released and it's unclear how the camera got into the facility or when the photo was taken.

Berry is serving a more than eight-year sentence on charges of robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault, according to Georgia Department of Corrections records. Berry is now being held at the Macon State Prison, the records show.
