GAINESVILLE - A toddler is dead and his 19-year-old uncle is in jail after a fatal accident in the east Hall County area Sunday afternoon.
Cpl. Auston Allen with the Georgia State Patrol said the accident happened around 12:25 p.m. in the driveway of a home on Miller Drive off Old Cornelia Highway. He said 2-year-old Landon Martin walked behind an SUV parked in the driveway.
"As the vehicle was backing up, the child walked behind it, of course was not seen, and a collision occurred - the vehicle ran over the top of the child," said Allen.
Allen said the little boy was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The uncle, Joshua Saunders, left the scene of the accident, reportedly to look for the child's father, according to Allen. He said Saunders was located a short distance from the scene of the fatal accident and was taken into custody by Hall County authorities.
"He was charged with DUI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and vehicular homicide," said Allen.
Allen said the Georgia State Patrol will continue its investigation.
