By B.J. Williams
BUFORD — Gwinnett County firefighters said no one was injured when a duplex in the 4000 block of Sturgeon Circle in Buford caught fire before dawn Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 5:38 a.m., according to Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge. He said in a press statement that they found heavy fire showing from the second floor of the unit on the left-side of the building.  He said the flames were brought under control by 6:02 a.m. The second floor of the unit sustained heavy damage.  Firefighters checked the adjoining duplex unit on the right side and found residual smoke damage, according to Rutledge.

The exact cause of the fire is currently undetermined.

Two occupants of the duplex unit where the fire erupted told investigators they discovered sparks in an unoccupied bedroom upstairs. They alerted a third person who was also inside the same duplex and all escaped unharmed. They alerted neighbors in the adjoining duplex unit and the building was evacuated when the fire department arrived. No one was injured.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help the displaced occupants.
