GAINESVILLE - Funeral services are set for Thursday for former Gainesville High School Principal Curtis Segars.

Segars began his career at Gainesville High School in 1963 as a coach and Social Studies teacher.

When he was named GHS Principal in 1968 his first task was integrating E.E. Butler High School into Gainesville High School. Segars retired from teaching in 1986. He was a recipient of the first honorary diploma awarded by Gainesville High School in 2009.

Segars, a veteran who served in Korea, also was a former chairman of the Hall County Commission. In late 2013, he was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Gainesville City Council as the city made the transition to an elected mayor's post.

Segars died Monday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center at the age of 81.
