Suwanee to hold final budget hearing Tuesday, approve budget

By Brian Stewart

SUWANEE - We're right in the thick of "budget season" as governments across the region work to prepare and approve their FY 2016 budgets ahead of the July 1 deadline, required by state law.

Suwanee is no different, and officials are holding their final budget hearing Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Suwanee City Hall. A final vote is expected at the ensuing council voting meeting at 6:30.

The $14, 843,060 budget on the table right now for FY 2016 would hold the millage rate at 4.93 mills, the same as FY 2015; council is scheduled to adopt the millage rate in August, according to an email from Public Information Officer Lynn DeWilde.

Also included in the plan is $45,000 to go towards downtown and public arts master plans.

The city is planning to add three new positions and two position upgrades in this budget, according to DeWilde. The new positions include a crime analyst, administrative assistant, and contracted pool of bailiffs to assist with court.

As far as those "upgrades" go, one part-time custodian position will be bumped up to full-time, and a police communication officer will move up to a supervisor position.

Other staff-related budget items include a maximum 4% pay-for-performance salary increase for city staff.

Suwanee will also spend $763,000 in capital expenditures, which includes the purchase of seven vehicles for the police and other departments.
