Man finds part of human skull on Ga. beach; identity is mystery

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) Authorities say they're trying to identify part of a human skull found partially buried in the sand on a Georgia beach.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said a man walking his dog found the skull Monday near the former U.S. Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island. Doering said it was sent to a crime lab.

Doering described it as the front facial portion of a skull with the upper molars intact but the front teeth missing.

The Florida Times-Union reports that police returned Monday afternoon when the tide receded to search for other remains. Doering said a lifeguard then found what appeared to be two human vertebrae in a tide pool. Doering said the vertebrae appear to be consistent with human remains, but authorities won't know until later.
