ATLANTA (AP) A heat wave that sent the mercury soaring to above 90 degrees in March has broken temperature records from Texas to Georgia.
The National Weather Service says temperature records fell across the Deep South on Tuesday, and the region has more warm weather in store before a cool-down begins.
Atlanta reached a record 84 degrees, according to NWS forecasters. Buford registered a high of 84,beating the 2012 record by two degrees. Gainesville tied the record high from 2012 with a temperature of 82.
The weather service says a high of 92 degrees in Austin, Texas, broke a record dating to 1936. The 86-degree reading at Greenwood, Mississippi, broke a record set in 1955.
Birmingham, Alabama, set a record with 87 degrees, the same as in the state capital of Montgomery.
The weather service says temperatures are again predicted in the mid- to upper 80s across the region on Wednesday before a gradual cool-down begins.
