Dahlonega's 'Bear on the Square' celebrating 20th anniversary this year

By AccessWDUN staff

Dahlonega and is celebrating the 20th year of its Bear on the Square festival next weekend, April 15-17.

Bear on the Square celebrates the culture of the Southern Appalachians through music, traditional craft and folkways.  This music was popularized by Allison Krause and The Indigo Girls.

Bear on the Square came to be 20 years ago when a frightened baby bear climbed a tree in Dahlonega’s Public Square. Shop and restaurant owners and patrons rushed outside to see the little bear curled up on a tree branch. The morning marked the beginning of spring and inspired the residents to create a festival to mark the end of the cold winter months.  There’s even a carved wooden bear permanently attached to the tree in question.

For more details about the festival, including the complete lineup and more information about performers and artists, schedules, and updates between now and the event, visit www.bearonthesquare.org.
