Gwinnett County PD accepting applications for Youth Police Academy

The Gwinnett County Police Department has opened up the application process for its second annual summer Youth Police Academy (YPA).

According to organizers, the YPA is designed to educate middle school and high school students about the police department and how officers enforce local and state laws. The goal of the YPA is to create and develop a relationship with students and give them an opportunity to learn about the Gwinnett County Police Department’s role in the community and the services it provides.

The YPA is free of charge and is open to all students that reside in Gwinnett County who will be enrolled in middle school or high school as of August 2017.  Each student must successfully pass the application process to attend the YPA.

Each YPA is a one week session, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.  

  • June 5-9, 2017 is for current or upcoming middle school students (6-8)
  • July 24-28, 2017 is for current or upcoming high school students (9-12)

The curriculum includes both classroom and practical application. Some of the activities include:

  • Police department overview
  • Pullovers
  • Aviation
  • K-9
  • Officer Safety
  • SWAT
  • Detention Center
  • Gangs
  • Crime Scene Unit
  • The Communications Center / 911
