Woman killed in collision with responding Elbert County sheriff’s car

A female driver in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was killed when her vehicle was struck by an Elbert County Sheriff’s unit on Ga. 77 (Hartwell Highway) at Ruckersville Road in Elberton Saturday.

“The Elbert County deputy was traveling north on Ga. 77 en route to an emergency call,” said Sgt. Brian Roberts of Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell. “He had all his emergency equipment activated.”

The female driver was pulling from Ruckersville Road, located just past the fairgrounds in Elberton, and entered the path of the deputy’s Ford Crown Victoria patrol car, resulting in the 5:16 p.m. crash, Roberts said.

“His vehicle impacted her car in the driver’s door,” Roberts said. “I can tell you that she was totally ejected – no seatbelt usage.”

She was transported to Elbert Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to Roberts.

The deputy, identified as Richard Ingram, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and also was transported to Elbert Memorial Hospital, Roberts said.

“There will not be charges,” Roberts said.

An autopsy is planned on the female driver, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family members, Roberts said.
