Boys basketball: Dawson, Banks, Jefferson cruise to wins; Bluff falls

CANTON – A monster third quarter blew the game open for the Dawson County Tigers Saturday afternoon in the War Lodge Invitational at Sequoyah High School. 

A stifling defense and pinpoint shooting accuracy helped the Tigers blow out Class 7A’s North Cobb, 70-50.

Jasper Gibson paced the Tigers with 22 points, 14 in the third quarter. Gibson also nailed six 3-pointers. 

The Tigers were in control leading 39-27 at the half, but the third quarter output blew the game wide open. Dawson outscored North Cobb 27-4 in the third period.

Luke Chism and Eli Burruss poured 16 points each, and Campbell Reed chipped in 8. 

Dawson (10-2, 3-1) will play Atlantic, Fla. in the Deep South Classic at Brookwood High Dec. 27. Game time is 3 p.m.

COMMERCE 63

Carl Cleveland’s triple-double performance led Banks County past Commerce Saturday on the road.

Cleveland scored 35 points, pulled 10 boards and dished out 13 assists in the win. He also recorded 3 blocks.

Commerce outpaced the Leopards 22-16 in the first quarter. After that, Cleveland, Pierce Martin, and Dakota Orr took over. The Leopards outscored Commerce 68-41 in the final 24 minutes.

Martin tossed in 21 points and Dakota Orr hit for 18 points and four blocks.

Clay Gosnell scored 6 points, Emmett Mabry and Mason Marlow chipped in 4 points. 

Banks County (7-5, 3-0) will host Habersham Central Dec. 28 in the Leopard Christmas tournament. 

 

JEFFERSON 64
HABERSHAM CENTRAL 40

Jacob Radaker scored 22 points and Spencer Darby had 12 to lead Jefferson past Habersham Central Saturday. 

Jefferson (7-5) will play in a tournament after Christmas in Pensacola, Fla.

CHEROKEE BLUFF 57

Griffin Neville scored 24 points and ripped down 9 rebounds in the loss to Prince Avenue Christian. 

Connor Boyd had 9 points, Jason Evrett scored 8 and Rolando Razo had 5.

Cherokee Bluff (8-5, 2-2) will play Gainesville in the first round of the Lanierland tournament at Chestatee High School on Dec. 27. Game time is 8 p.m.
