TOCCOA — Toccoa investigators continue to search for a vehicle they believe might belong to the suspect involved in a shooting on South Alexander Street Wednesday afternoon.
Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize said authorities are canvassing the county and surrounding areas for the suspect.
“We’ve got a BOLO out for a grey small Ford vehicle, like a Ford Escape or Ford Taurus with a white female driver with a Florida tag that was seen leaving the scene,” he said. “The Sheriff and GSP are canvassing the county for that vehicle. They’ve got several ideas. They think they know who it is, but nobody for sure.”
Mize tells WNEG News it happened shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday on South Alexander Street behind Austin’s Pawn Shop.
Mize says the GBI was on the scene for hours Wednesday afternoon gathering evidence and interviewing residents, but so far they have few details about what led up to the shooting.
“We don’t even know all of the people involved,” Mize said. “We know that there was a body and people out here. Right now, we don’t even have any witnesses. We have several people who came out after shots were heard, but no eyewitnesses yet.”
The victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, was found lying on the side of Alexander Street.
“They were working him when we got here,” Mize said. “They were doing chest compressions and everything. Officers kept that up until EMS got here and transported.”
Mize confirmed the victim was pronounced dead at Stephens County Hospital.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the small grey Ford vehicle with a Florida tag driven by a female is asked to call their local 9-1-1. Callers do not have to give their name, Mize said.
