Efforts to recall two elected officials in Hoschton will proceed after a ruling by a Jackson County judge this week.
A community group began working to remove Mayor Teresa Kenerly and Mayor Pro Tem Jim Cleveland after Kenerly admitted to ignoring an applicant for the city's administrator position because of his race and Cleveland made negative remarks about interracial marriage in an effort to support Kenerly's decision.
The Gwinnett Daily Post reports the group also alleges Kenerly did not receive competitive bids for city projects in the proper way.
The judge did impose conditions on the ruling that include Kenerly not advancing the city administrator candidate's application for additional consideration and if the mayor and Cleveland do not convene a panel with the purpose of hearing ethics complaints against them.
Mary Morrison, who leads the recall committee, said the group needs at least 400 registered city voters to sign a recall petition.
If that is successful, then a majority of those voters would also need to cast ballots in December in favor of recalling the two officials.
