By B.J. Williams

Thousands of chickens perished in a Monday morning fire at a chicken house in Mt. Airy.

Chad Black, Director of Habersham County Emergency Services, said crews were dispatched to 313 Morris Frady Road at 9:58 a.m. to a reported commercial fire.

"Units arrived to find an approximately 15,000 sq. ft. chicken house with smoke and flames showing," Black wrote in an email statement. "Units were able to get a stop on the fire and called a knock-down on main body of fire at 10:45."

He said personnel stayed on scene to work hot spots. Black also said crews had to use a water shuttle to get to the scene of the fire.

Black said an estimated 15,000 birds were inside the structure a the time of the fire, and he said it appeared all of them perished. There were no injuries to bystanders or emergency personnel.

At this point, there is no indication on how the fire started.
