Football: Johnson's Roquemore to take over at Towns County

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

HIAWASSEE — The Towns County Board of Education approved Jason Roquemore to be its next football coach starting with the 2019 season on Monday night.

Roquemore spent the past seven seasons at Johnson, where he compiled a 16-54 overall record and just one winning season. He will take over for John Cornett, who stepped down after three seasons last month.

Cornett stepped down to head back to Maine where his family is from. He led the Indians to their first-ever playoff appearance in 2018.

Roquemore said his goal is to build on Cornett’s work at the smallest public school in the state.

“Coach Cornett did a great job. I have some big shoes to fill from the standpoint that he showed them they could win up here,” Roquemore said. “And I definitely think you can win consistently up here and we’re going to come in and try to keep the positive attitude Coach Cornett instilled going. I’m excited about getting started.”

Roquemore, for now, is still at Johnson working out his contract but will be handling the main football responsibilities at Towns County.

“We’re working on that part of things but I’ll be spending a couple of days a week until spring practice for now,” Roquemore said.
