State officers arrest Cleveland car dealer on theft charges

By AccessWDUN staff

A well-known North Georgia car dealer remains in the White County Detention Center after his arrest by state officers Tuesday.

White County Sheriff’s Capt. Rick Kelley said the Georgia Department of Revenue charged Mitch Simpson with three felony counts of theft by conversion.

The arrests followed complaints by customers after the White County dealership, located three miles south of Cleveland, closed suddenly, leaving vehicle purchasers without paperwork to obtain tags.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that Josh Waites, the Department of Revenue’s Director of Special Investigations said his department is working with the dealership’s bonding company and the Georgia Attorney General’s office to get the customers' taxes paid and their vehicles registered.

This is not the first time Simpson has faced serious charges. In 2011, he was indicted for making false statements on loan applications as part of a federal investigation into the now-defunct Community Bank & Trust.

Simpson was booked in the White County Jail after he was arrested at his home in Habersham County. No bond was set.
