Tennis: GHS girls upset South Paulding

The Gainesville girls tennis team upset No. 2-seed South Paulding, 3-2, in the first round of the Class 6A state tournament Thursday on the road.

Freshman Avery Vlassis (No. 3 singles) clinched the win for the Lady Red Elephants with a second set tiebreaker. It was the longest set of the match.

"She showed endurance and grit to pull out the win," GHS coach Kendall Gruhn said. "I am so proud of this team for rising up when they needed to."

Hannah Williams picked up the win in the No. 2 singles match against South Paulding, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, No. 2 team of Hannah Wagner and Savannah Brown knocked off their opponents in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. 

The Lady Red Elephants will host Centennial next week at Longwood Park. Day and time of the match will be announced later.

 

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3,
FLOWERY BRANCH 1

Olivia Nance won the only match in Flowery Branch's 3-1 loss to Cartersville in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs in Cartersville Thursday afternoon.

Nance beat her opponent, 6-3, 6-0. 

The Lady Falcons season is complete.
