Former Flowery Branch City Councilwoman dies

Former Flowery Branch City Councilwoman Mary Jones died Thursday at her residence at the age of 76.

Jones left the city council at the end of last year. Mayor Mike Miller, who announced her resignation at the city council meeting, said Jones cited "health issues" in deciding to step down. The Flowery Branch City Council held a moment of silence in Jones' memory at the beginning of its meeting Thursday night.

She and her husband, the late Dean Jones, lived on the family farm in South Hall for 58 years and were active in the Hall County Farm Bureau.  She served as chairman of the Hall County Farm Bureau Women's Committee for 34 years. Jones' obituary also describes her as a small business owner who was "always interested in the progress of the town of Flowery Branch."

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home.
