A rezoning request from McEver Road United Methodist Church for a new church site was supposed to go before Flowery Branch City Council for a final vote Thursday night. The church, however, withdrew its request with no explanation.
The church had received first reading approval on July 19 for the 11-acre tract on McEver Road and Gainesville Street. At that time, council members voted 3-1 to approve the request with Councilwoman Leslie Jarchow abstaining and Councilman Ed Asbridge voting against the request, saying the section of McEver Road in question was more suitable for commercial development.
City Planning Director Rich Atkinson told council the church gave no explanation for withdrawing the application.
