Lula woman charged with using fake $50 bills at grocery store

By B.J. Williams
A Lula woman has been arrested for passing counterfeit $50 bills at a grocery store in Flowery Branch and police think other businesses might have been victimized, as well.

Flowery Branch Police Department Investigator Robin Kemp said Jennifer Raby, 33, was arrested at Publix on Spouts Springs Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday as she was trying to purchase money orders.

"She was trying to buy $1500 worth of money orders from Western Union," Kemp said. "[The clerk] noticed that some of the bills didn't look right."

The clerk called police and when officers arrived, they confiscated the money and determined that the $50 bills were bogus.

"It appears those bills were $50 bills that were printed over bleached out $10 bills," Kemp said.

He also said Raby had what he called a substantial amount of cash on her when she was arrested. Kemp said detectives believed it is possible Raby had passed other phony bills in the area.

Kemp said Raby refused to talk with officers, but they were able to find her vehicle in the parking lot and impound it as part of the investigation.

Raby was charged with two counts of forgery and booked into the Hall County Jail. She was not listed in the jail population on Thursday.
