A former deputy for the Pickens County Sheriff's Department has been arrested on charges of child molestation, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said 57-year-old Gaylon Mathews was arrested Tuesday, two days after the sheriff's department contacted the state agency to help with a child molestation investigation.
Mathews was charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation and one count of child molestation in connection with assaults on a child under the age of 16. The alleged incidents happened in 2014 and 2015.
According to published reports in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Mathews last worked as a probation officer for the county in 2018. He worked as a deputy in 2017 and 2018, according to the newspaper.
