Four people were injured in a Tuesday morning traffic accident that blocked a portion of U.S. 129 near Jefferson for several hours.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers from the Athens post were called to the scene of the accident just before 7 a.m.
They were able to determine a Kenworth tractor trailer loaded with sand was traveling northbound on the highway and ran into the back of a Ford F250 that was stopped at a traffic light at Concord Road near the Pendergrass Flea Market. Both the big rig and the pickup truck traveled across the intersection and into the southbound lanes of traffic, striking a Kia Optima head-on.
After hitting the Kia, the tractor trailer continued across the median and overturned, dumping a large amount of fuel into the median.
Troopers said all four occupants of the Kia were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of injuries. The four men were identified as Jun Ki Hun, Ki Sun Park, Gihun Kim and Jongsung Lee. They were visiting the area from the Republic of Korea, according to investigators.
The driver of the tractor trailer was identified as Randy Steven Royer of Hartwell.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as James Harold Presley.
There is no word on charges at this point in the investigation.
