Even as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hit Georgia's economy, there is some good news in June's unemployment report from the Georgia Department of Labor.
State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Gainesville metro's unemployment rate decreased by 1.7 percentage points, reaching 5.9% for June. A year ago, the jobless rate was 3.1%.
"June continued to show positive growth across all MSAs,” said Butler in his monthly report. “We saw almost all major indicators head in the right direction but continue to work to support Georgia businesses and get Georgians back to work.”
Other numbers for June in the Gainesville metro:
- Gainesville ended June with 87,800 jobs. That number increased by 1,200 from May to June but was down by 5,500 when compared to this time last year.
- The labor force decreased in June by 453 and ended the month with 96,260. That number is down 5,365 when compared to June of 2019.
- Gainesville finished the month with 90,618 employed residents. That number increased by 1,285 over the month but is down by 7,808 when compared to the same time a year ago.
- The number of unemployment claims went down by 40 percent in June. When compared to last June, claims were up by about 2,378 percent.
Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 1,226 active job postings in metro Gainesville for June.
