As the Flowery Branch Police Department investigates the theft of a 75-year-old man's moped, community members aren't waiting for all the pieces to fall into place - they're raising money right now to replace the vehicle.
Flowery Branch Police Chief David Spillers said officers have been working with Ryan Dexter, the Flowery Branch man who began raising money last week to replace the moped that belonged to the man they call "Mr. Roy."
"He is a (75 years young) member of the community who is on a marginal disability income," Spillers said in an email statement. "He has no other form of transportation and just needs a little something to be able to get his medications and a few groceries."
The theft occurred while Mr. Roy was inside Citizens Pharmacy picking up a prescription.
Dexter said he has been working with Gainesville Motorsports to purchase a moped at a reduced cost.
At publication time, the fundraising effort was $500 short of its goal.
