About 700 gallons of sewage spilled into a creek in the Chicopee Village area Wednesday afternoon, but Gainesville water department officials do not think the overflow caused any major health hazards.
Water Resources Director Linda MacGregor said a line clogged with grease in a remote area between Palmour Drive and Chicopee Village sent the sewage into E.T. Creek, which is a tributary to the North Oconee River.
"We wanted to let the public know as soon as possible about this spill. However, the department has no indication at this time that the incident caused any public or environmental health hazards," said MacGregor in a statement released by the city.
She said city crews were able to stop the overflow about 20 minutes after they discovered the problem at 3:38 p.m.
MacGregor said there was no sign of dead or distressed aquatic life. Crews cleaned the area, applied lime to control odor and then spread hay in the area.
"All water quality parameters, both upstream and downstream of the location, were within water quality standards," MacGregor said.
The city notified the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
