CLEVELAND — White County's Silas Mulligan is a big reason the Warriors boys basketball team is atop the Region 7-3A standings.
In two key region games last week -- Lumpkin (66-58) and Dawson (76-48) -- Mulligan scored a combined 46 points to lead the Warriors (9-5, 6-1 Region 7-3A) in back-to-back wins.
"We knew we needed these two wins," Mulligan said. "We've got to win all of the games from now on. We want to be region champs."
The play of the Warriors this season has Cleveland buzzing. Some might call it a complete turnaround of a program that won just four region games last season. Whatever the new mojo is in White County, Mulligan and crew are headed in the right direction.
"I love Silas to death," Coach Robbie Bailey said. "He's physically gifted. He's strong, athletic, can shoot and get to the rim. He's a good player and teammate."
Mulligan has impacted more than just his coach. Teammate Cooper Turner says he's fun to be around.
"Silas is goofy," Turner said. "He is a fun person to be around, though. He sets the energy at practice. He's a very, very fun to be around, and he makes us better."
Bailey, in his first season as head coach, has the Warriors on track to achieve the team's preseason goals.
"This team has played really well," he said. "We've got a lot of goals. That's been the best part so far, they come to work every day and try to get better. They are a joy to coach. We feel good where we're at now. We know we've got a lot of work to do but at this point, we feel pretty good about the work we've put in."
